In my March column for the Alberta Outdoorsmen, I discuss the collapsing fish populations in Alberta. When I first came here 40 years ago, the fishing was amazing with anglers taking home many fish for the table. Now, we must catch-and-release many of the fish we catch to protect their spawning populations. Most anglers prefer to take something home and switch to what used to be less popular species that do not have as severe regulations protecting them. One of these species is the lake whitefish which inhabits many of our lakes. Unfortunately, these fish are also showing signs they may be over-fished. How often must we drive a fish population to collapse to learn there must be a better way?
